Description
The University of California San Diego Library seeks applications from highly motivated, innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented professionals to join the Library as our Life and Health Sciences Collections Strategist & Subject Librarian (at the level of Assistant, Associate or Full Librarian). This position reports to the Assistant Director of the Library’s Collection Development & Management Programs (CDM).

Responsibilities of the Position

Life and Health Sciences Collection Strategist
In support of the Life and Health Sciences subjects, this position will be responsible for:
- Guides, supports, shares information with, and provides collections related direction to Subject Librarians.
- Collaborates with the Library’s Collections Strategy Team to develop, review, and assess innovative projects that improve the sustainability of the Library’s collection investments.
- Contributes to decision-making for renewals, new title selections, and cancellations, on local and UC-wide licensed resources.
- Oversees budget allocations and expenditures, including new continuation requests.
- Provides leadership and guidance in transforming the nature of collection development to include research data, born digital resources, and strategies that increase openness and access.
- Actively participates in the Library’s Scholarly Communications initiatives to identify and assess open access investment options.
- Manages the physical collections, including coordination of weeding and space-reduction projects for existing analog collections. Provides input and recommendations in managing physical collections in context of UC Shared Print Initiatives and other regional and national consortia.
- Represents the Library on the UC Health & Life Sciences Common Knowledge Group. Collaborates on the selection, renewal, and assessment of shared licensed resources. In some cases, responsible for negotiating licensing terms and agreements for resources with publishers and other UC Libraries.

Subject Librarian
Specific liaison group to be assigned based on skills of successful candidate, who in support of assigned patron group will be responsible for:
- Serves as the primary contact and information resource on library services, resources, and policies.
- Provides research consultation, reference, and instruction services to support undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research, teaching and learning endeavors. Serves as a resource for information on data services, scholarly communication, and digital scholarship.
- Develops collections to support the teaching, learning, and research needs of the students and faculty.


Required Qualifications
- MLS/MLIS or equivalent advanced degree. Other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields related to library services may be substituted.
- 2 or more years of professional library experience in collection development and management.
- Familiarity with electronic scholarly resources and reference tools in the Life or Health Sciences.
- Ability to provide advanced research assistance and participate in course-integrated instruction in one or more Life or Health Sciences subjects.
- Excellent analytical, interpersonal, communication, time management, organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to plan, document, and complete projects.
- Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment and with faculty, students, staff and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education.
