Duncan Tonatiuh (Dear Primo) delivers a picture book biography about the famous Mexican painter Diego Rivera, following him as he progresses from a young doodler to a studied artist and finally, a master muralist. The final pages close by imagining what Rivera might paint if he were alive today. Perhaps Tonatiuh’s illustrations are a bit lackluster for a young picture book audience accustomed to bright eye-popping colors and pages with less detailed images. His artwork, however, is intriguing—first hand-drawn and then digitally collaged—and certainly makes a case for art in a book, suitably, about a famous artist. The book includes a glossary of words and references in story sequence, an author’s note, a list of places where Rivera’s work can be found, and a bibliography. Recommended.
